Heidi’s New face…:(

April 30, 2010

On Tuesday night the season premiere of the popular MTV show, “The Hills” aired. This show is about a real group of friends living in LA.  Just recently one of its cast members, Heidi Montag has changed her whole entire appearance by getting 10 different types of surgical procedures done to her face and body.  On Tuesday’s episode she reveals her “new face” to her family. I was shocked to see how different she looks. This show has been around for a couple of years now and it was so suprising to see this dramatic change.  I believe, along with many other people, that Heidi was very pretty woman before her surgery but apparently she didn’t think so. She said the reason she wanted her surgery was because living in LA you have to reach certain standards. She had said that she was constantly insecure about her appearance and getting the surgeries done has made her more confident and happy with her appearance. This is really sad. The changes that Heidi has made to her face and body are permanent…she will never look like her natural self. See…here’s the thing, I think that everyone has their flaws and no one is made perfect.  I think that if someone for instance does not like their nose, then sure get it fixed surgically but when you change your entire appearance like Heidi did, that’s when you know there is something wrong with that person psychologically.  Maybe fame became too much for Heidi.  I understand that she is constantly being followed by cameras and constantly being photographed but that if it had become too much for her she should have seen a psychiatrist and talked about her problems with self-esteem. Who knows maybe she is suffering from something greater than just insecurities.    It’s scary what fame and too much media attention can do to someone.

Sponge BOB!!!!!!!!

April 23, 2010

“LIDO BEACH, N.Y. — When her best friend turned purple, Miriam Starobin’s thoughts turned to yellow — cartoon hero SpongeBob SquarePants.”

“The denizen of fictional undersea Bikini Bottom was being credited Friday with inspiring a lifesaving rescue during music class at a seaside school earlier this week.”

I love Sponge Bob Square Pants, but who would have thought it could provide any useful information? I read this article on DailyNews.com about this girl (12 years old) who saved her friend’s life by performing the Heimlich on her. Apparently the girls were laughing and all of a sudden one of them stopped laughing and her friend noticed that something was wrong and realized she was choking. Once she realized what was happening to her friend she remembered an episode of Sponge Bob where Sponge Bob used the Heimlich maneuver to retrieve a clarinet lodged in Squidward’s throat.  LOLL!!!!!!!!. This just goes to show how much media and television impacts people in their everyday life, especially little kids.

Lady Gaga and Beyonce’s New Video…Wow.

March 12, 2010

This video was nine minutes of non sense. Firstly, I cannot believe that this is actually allowed to be aired. I am very disappointed in these two artists because they have fans ranging from all different ages and they seem not to care. The song “Telephone” is a really cool song on its own, but this video was very offensive and completely inappropriate.  I was actually introduced to this song by my 13-year-old cousin a couple months ago, and when I heard the video for it aired yesterday I couldn’t wait to check it out. After watching it, I fear for the eyes and ears of young fans. It is this kind of message and these kinds of videos that are corrupting adolescent minds. I’m in complete shock. I can’t seem to figure out what the purpose of this video was. Obviously this video was created for fans but what angers me is that their fans are mostly young girls-girls that are easily targeted by the media everyday. What upsets me even more is that anyone can view this video on YouTube, even though it contains adult material, hard offensive language, ongoing violence, sexually oriented nudity and many other horrible things that are not suitable for the younger audience. Not okay…I’m disgusted and do not plan on listening to this song ever again.

Weight Loss Commercials

February 26, 2010

This last week I have noticed that I cannot stand weight loss commercials. It seems like every couple of minutes another commercial about  “Nutri System”  or “Jenny Craig” airs on TV.  I find myself quickly changing the channel in annoyance as soon as some celebrity starts talking about, “My body this” or “My body that”.  I just don’t feel like these commercials allow girls to ever feel comfortable with their own bodies.  The Kim Kardashian “Quick Trim” commercial in particular really got to me when I saw it.  Personally, the only reason why I liked Kim Kardashian was because unlike most of the celebrities in Hollywood, she had a fuller body and wasn’t trying to go for the twig look.  She wasn’t super skinny and didn’t look like she starved herself. You could tell she embraced her curves and was proud of her physique-like every woman should be. Then I saw her weight loss commercial. Boy what a buzz kill that was.

A few quotes that got my attention were:

“Create the body you deserve.”

“You can change the way you look”

“You have the power to reinvent yourself.”

The message that is being sent out to us women is that our bodies are not considered  beautiful the way they are, and that in order to meet the “hot” standards we must lose weight.  This message could not be any more wrong.  Imagine the impact these quotes have on the self esteem of women. It’s no wonder why so many young girls suffer from eating disorders…These girls simply just want to “live the dream”.  How are we supposed to feel beautiful if we are constantly told we need to change how we look to be socially acceptable. The media needs to stop obsessing over body image. UGH!
